Olaf Cussó receives the Research Lilly Award for PhD students
Olaf Cussó, PhD student at IQCC under the supervision of Dr. Miquel Costas and Dr. Xavi Ribas, was awarded with a Research Award for PhD students given by the international chemical company Lilly. These awards recognize the research excellence of PhD students in organic, analytical or pharmaceutical chemistry and they intend to strengthen the interaction between industry and academia. Among the received applications, an external scientific committee, chose 3 winners who received 1500 € as a support of their research activity. The winners, including Olaf, delivered a talk during the bestowal ceremony that took place in the headquarters of Lilly in Alcobendas (Madrid) on 26th September 2015. The event was graced with the presence of Prof. David MacMillan from Princeton University (New Jersey, USA) who delivered a plenary lecture on his pioneer works in the field of organocatalysis.

The QBIS-CAT group participates in the Innovative Training Network NoNoMeCat
The QBIS-Cat group of IQCC is a participant of the Innovative Training Network NoNoMeCat (Non-Noble Metal Catalysis). NoNoMeCat is a 4-year Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN-ETN) project starting on 1st January 2016. The NoNoMeCat project brings together an academic/industrial consortium with complementary skills consisting of 9 partners (University of Utrecht, Universitat de Girona, École Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Leibniz Institut für Katalyse, Universität Bern, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Max Plank Institut, DSM Chemical Technology) from 7 countries. NoNoMeCat will enroll 13 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) who will receive structured training in experimental and theoretical aspects of non-noble metal chemistry as well as transferable skills such as research integrity, scientific communication and public outreach.
The NoNoMeCat network led by the University of Utrecht and with a total budget of over 3.5 million Euros, aims at providing excellent and structured interdisciplinary training to a generation of young researchers in the field of homogeneous catalysis with earth abundant first row transition metals, aiming at pushing the boundaries of the field in terms of catalyst stability, selectivity, mechanistic understanding and scalability. These challenges are addressed in three areas of high fundamental and practical significance: the oxidation of hydrocarbons, the formation of new C-X bonds (C-C, C-N) bonds through cross-coupling reactions, and clean energy production. The QBIS-CAT group will lead the oxidation of hydrocarbons topic, and will enroll and direct two PhD students.

Anna Company wins the Clara Immerwahr Award 2015
Dr. Anna Company has received the Clara Immerwahr Award 2015 from the cluster of Excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis” (UniCat).
This award is honored for her contribution to the field of bioinorganic chemistry, specifically for the synthesis of high-valent metal complexes. The Clara Immerwahr Award is conferred by the Cluster of Excellence UniCat to honor an exceptional young female scientist in the field of catalysis, and invites the recipient to cooperate with UniCat working groups. UniCat is an interdisciplinaty research network focused on catalysis within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the German Reasearch Foundation. Four universities and two Max Planck Institutes in Berlin and Potsdam are involved in UniCat. The bestowal ceremony took place in the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) on 13th February 2015.

Zoel Codolà wins the Gold Medal at PhD level of the European Young Chemist Awards
Zoel Codolà, who carries out PhD studies at IQCC under the supervision of Dr. Miquel Costas and Dr. Julio Lloret, won the Gold Medal at PhD level of The European Young Chemist Awards. These awards, which are sponsored by the Italian Chemical Society and the Italian Consiglio Nazionale dei Chimici, are given every two years during the EuCheMS Chemistry Congress. The European Young Chemists Awards are intended to showcase and recognize the excellent research being carried out by young scientists working in the chemical sciences. This year the 5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress took place in Istanbul from 31st August to 4th September 2014. The finalists, including up to 4 IQCC members (apart from Zoel Codolà, Marc Font, Marc-Garcia Borràs and Dr. Eduard Matito were also nominated), delivered a talk at the Congress and the awardees were announced during the closing ceremony.

Miquel Costas is distinguished with an ICREA Academia Award
Miquel Costas was distinguished with an ICREA Academia award in its 2013 edition, by the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies, promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya. These awards recognize excellence in research investigators permanently linked to public universities in Catalonia. The ICREA Academia programme was launched in 2008 with the aim of fostering and rewarding excellence in research done by professors. Thus, the programme contributes to the intensification of the research carried out by university professors who are in a fully active and expansive phase of their research careers. The award cerimony took place on the 2nd September 2014 in the Palau de la Generalitat and was presided by the director of ICREA, Jaume Bertranpetit, and the Conseller de la Generalitat, Andreu Mas-Collell.
